Same-Sex Partnerships

Family Lawyers for Same-Sex Couples

Same-sex unions are an evolving area of law. While Michigan does not allow same-gender couples to marry, contract law can provide many of the rights and benefits of marriage, including property rights, alimony and child custody.

At Corriveau Law in Northville, Michigan, we are a family law firm and we are proud to serve all families, including domestic partners and gay and lesbian couples. Our lawyers draft legal documents that will provide a legal basis for your understanding of what rights the partners of a same-sex partnership should have.

Without legal documents, same-sex couples have no rights in Michigan. For example, if your partner becomes ill and is unable to communicate for himself or herself, you would have no rights to discuss your loved one's care or condition with doctors. Your partner's family could even bar you from hospital visits. Our lawyers can draft health care powers of attorney and living wills, which will ensure that you and your partner have the right to make medical decisions for each other in the event of incapacity.

Legal contracts can provide many ¾ but not all ¾ of the rights and benefits of marriage. You can be granted the right to inherit property and you can adopt your partner's children. However, same-sex partners are not eligible for state and federal tax deductions and benefits. While many businesses provide health care benefits to same-sex couples, they are not required to by law.
